In October 1745, the country was facing a national emergency. In Edinburgh the ‘Young Pretender’, Prince Charles Edward Stuart was holding court and vowing to restore the Stuart dynasty to the throne. Anti-Catholic feeling was running high across the country. Then came the shock news of the defeat of British forces at Prestonpans. It was at this critical moment that a mysterious document came to light near Poole which appeared to incriminate two local Catholic land-owners . . .
