In 50 years from 1847 to 1893, Poole like the rest of the country, experienced a transport revolution with the coming of the railways. Lines sliced across the countryside, curved out to sea, leaped over roads and strode across valleys on towering viaducts. People discovered the joy of the day excursion. New communities grew up near stations as commuting became an option and Railway Hotels appeared in every town. In Poole as elsewhere decisions were made which affect people’s lives up to the present day.
